Seasonal Lawn Treatments

Weed Control

March - May

Spring Feed & Weed Control

This treatment is designed to kick start the growth of your lawn after the Winter.  A granular fertilizer is applied and will improve the colour and strength of the grass and encourage roots to grow downwards.  A selective weed control is applied to control weeds which are starting to sprout as the soil temperatures start rising.

Moss Control

March - May

Moss Control

A moss control can also be applied if necessary in early Spring if an accumulation of moss has developed over the Winter due to wet weather.

Weed Control

May - July

First Summer Feed & Weed Control

As the Spring feed fertilizer comes to an end we then apply our first granular Summer feed which provides plenty of nourishment to keep it looking green and healthy over the next couple of months.  I also treat any stubborn weeds by applying a selective weed control product.

Lawn Summer Feed

July - September

Second Summer Feed

Your lawn will be looking its best at the moment and to enable it to continue looking good a second Summer Feed will be applied.  The type of feed depends on the weather, if it’s a wet Summer then a granular feed will be applied however if it’s dry we will apply a liquid feed and this should keep it looking its best for a further couple of months.  If there are any fresh weeds then again I will spot treat these with a selective weedkiller.

Winter Lawn Feed

September - November

Autumn/Winter Feed

The Autumn/Winter feed is a very important feed because it strengthens the plant going into cold, wet, dark months, our Autumn/Winter feed application contains a low nitrogeon, root enhancing feed that will create a more robust grass plant ready for the Winter.

Moss Growth in Lawn

September - March

Winter Moss Control

Preventing moss growth during the Winter months is vital for your lawn to thrive and I am able to offer a moss control treatment to avoid this.

Moss in Lawn

Aeration (All year)

Aeration is one of the most beneficial treatments for your lawn and is an effective way of reducing thatch and compaction in lawns, often the main causes of moss in lawns.

The benefits are:

  • Reduces soil compaction and allows air, moisture and light into the root system
  • Encourages deeper and stronger roots and helps improve surface drainage
  • Allows nutrients to reach the plant roots
  • Reduces thatch levels
  • Improves the lawn’s ability to cope with drought and disease

Aeration is an essential part of a good annual lawn treatment programme and TLC offer a couple of different types of aeration; Hollow-Tine and Solid-Tine. I will recommend which type is best for your lawn depending on current lawn, soil or weather conditions.

Scarification
(Spring or Autumn)

Scarification is the mechanical removal of organic matter/thatch from a lawn. It is important to remove a build up of thatch/moss from your lawn as it can be damaging to a lawn as it prevents water, air and nutrients getting through to the root system which can result in lawns becoming thin, patchy and spongy.  Scarification removes most of the surface thatch and is an essential part of a good annual lawn treatment programme.

The benefits are:

  • Allows nutrients to reach the plant roots
  • Allows air to circulate around the plant
  • Helps prevent disease
  • Produces a greener, healthier lawn

As scarification is an invasive process it should only be undertaken in the Autumn or Spring when weather conditions allow for plenty of warmth and moisture to aid recovery. If you scarify at other times of the year it can cause damage to your lawn.

Overseeding (Spring through to Autumn)

Lawns can thin and grass plant reproduction rates can drop over time and this can allow moss and weeds to creep into your lawn. Overseeding adds new grass plants into your lawn to thicken the sward and improve the overall appearance.

Renovation (Spring or Autumn)

Some lawns will need to be renovated as treatments alone wouldn’t benefit the lawn. In renovating a lawn we would:

  • Apply a moss and weed control
  • Scarify the lawn in a number of different directions to remove any dead moss and thatch that has built up over time
  • Overseed with a dwarf rye grass seed unless the customer is using the lawn for a more ornamental lawn then a more luxury grass seed can be used
  • Top dress to cover the seed as this allows for better germination and grass establishment.  This also stops birds eating the seed.
  • Finally I apply a pre seed fertilizer to encourage the seed to grow

Wetting Agents

Wetting agents can be applied during drought conditions if your soil doesn’t allow irrigation to penetrate down through to the roots.  They make the water wet and by acting as penetrates, they break the surface tension and allow soil moisture to flow through the soil profile.

Lawn Disease Management

The perfect way to minimise disease infection is to keep your lawn as healthy as possible with a seasonal treatment programme however with the current British climate we do tend to get humid conditions with rainfall and this can lead to fungal diseases such as red thread, fusarium and anthracnose. TLC offers a disease control fungicide which can be applied to help cure such diseases.

Lawn Mowing
Moles in Lawn

Pest Control

Chafer Grubs and Leatherjackets can both cause severe damage to your lawn, they cause damage by eating the root system of your lawn and can kill the grass off completely.  The initial signs of an infestation are birds and wildlife feeding on the insects and straw patches will start to appear on your lawn as the grass starts to die.  TLC apply the appropriate insecticide to your lawn to kill the insects.

Moles can cause significant damage to your lawn and make the lawn look unsightly. The initial signs to show you have a mole in your lawn are raised ridges and mounds of loose evacuated earth commonly known as mole hills.  Their activities can destroy a lawn so time and effort is needed to replace or remove the soil that forms the molehills.

TLC offer a mole catching service and depending on the customer's requirements either a humane or traditional trap can be used.  If the humane trap is used I will release the mole in woodland areas by my home.

Hard Surface Weed Control

We can apply a total weed control on hard services during the growing season (March - November inclusive).
